The National Cancer Awareness Day celebration was first announced in September 2014 by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, the Indian Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare. In September 2014, a committee was formed and it was decided that National Cancer Awareness Day would be celebrated on 7 November every year. National Cancer Awareness Day is celebrated every year to create awareness about early detection and prevention methods of cancer. If detected early, 90 percent cancer can be cured. Dr. Harsh Vardhan initiated a state-level cancer control process that encourages early detection and research to find a cure for cancer. National Cancer Control Program was started in 1975 to provide facilities for cancer treatment. In 1984–85, some changes were made in the National Cancer Control Program to make the cancer treatment process more efficient and available to all.
