The second wave of corona in India proved to be very fatal. Thousands of people died and lakhs became victims of infection. Now there is talk of third wave. It is being said that the third wave of corona in India will have the biggest impact on children. Governments are very worried about this. To deal with the third wave, the government has increased pediatric beds in hospitals across the country. But in the midst of all this a good news has come. A recent study has claimed that even if the third wave of corona comes, it will not have a serious effect on children. Even if children are infected with corona, they will not fall seriously ill. The study also said that the mortality rate in children up to 12 years of age infected with corona will also be negligible. This study has been done by the Pediatric Covid Study Group. Many eminent doctors of the country are involved in the study.
mild symptoms in most children
The study was conducted between November last year and March this year. After studying the clinical profiles of 402 children suffering from corona admitted in 5 hospitals of the country, it was proved that corona does not have a serious effect on children. It was seen in the study that the cases of death in children up to 12 years are also very less. The 45 children included in the study were below 1 year of age, 118 children were between 1 and 5 years old and 221 children were between 5 and 12 years old. According to the news published in TOI, Dr. Kana Ram Jat, who was involved in the study, says that the most common symptom among children suffering from corona was fever. However, cases of fever were found in only 38 percent of children. Other symptoms include cough, sore throat, stomach upset, vomiting and diarrhea. On the other hand, Jhuma Shankar, Assistant Professor, Pediatric Department, AIIMS, said, ‘Most of the children involved in the study were found to have mild symptoms, only 10 percent had moderate to severe symptoms.
Only 13 children with other diseases die in 402
The study found that out of 402 corona victims, only 13 children (3.2%) died. Although the children who died, all of them had some other health related problems i.e. comorbidities. 5 out of 13 children had problems with the nervous system, 3 were suffering from congenital heart disease. One deceased had acute leukemia, 1 had Wilson’s disease, 1 had type 1 nephrotic syndrome. 2 children were suffering from other diseases. According to doctors, symptoms were included in the study
No argument for children being affected in the third wave
The children were given therapy for support. Patients without symptoms did not need treatment. Some children were also given other therapies like antibiotics and antivirals. Dr Jhuma Shankar further said that there is no scientific basis to confirm that a possible third wave will affect children the most. Although doctors say that there is no vaccine available for children in the country, if such a situation arises, then we should be prepared in advance. Pfizer’s vaccine trials have been approved for children over the age of 12 in the US and UK. In India too, Bharat Biotech has got approval for the trial of the vaccine on children.
