On this day in the history of India, on June 25, 1975, a nationwide emergency was declared. These orders were given on the recommendation of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the country. Which gave rise to many historical events. This was the most controversial period in the history of Indian politics because elections in India were postponed during the Emergency. There was a state of emergency in India for a period of 21 months from 25 June 1975 to 21 March 1977.
In 1975, the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed declared a state of emergency on the recommendation of the government led by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This declaration was made under Article 352 of the Indian Constitution. At that time Indira Gandhi had imprisoned every person who raised her voice against the government.

Let us inform that the draft of Emergency in the country was signed by the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on the midnight of 25 June. After which the whole country was made hostage of Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi. On the morning of June 26, at six o’clock in the morning, Indira Gandhi called an emergency meeting of the cabinet, in which Home Secretary Khurana narrated the emergency manifesto to the cabinet.
Anti-Indira sent to jail during Emergency
Jayaprakash Narayan, who was considered a staunch opponent of Indira, was arrested on the night of 26 June at 1.30 pm as soon as the Emergency was imposed in the country. Along with him, many other leaders opposing Indira’s policies were also arrested and put in many jails across the country.
The information about the emergency in the country was given to the general public through All India Radio. After the imposition of emergency across the country, thousands of people were arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA).
Explain that Article 352 of the Constitution provides for imposition of emergency in case of external aggression and internal disturbance or armed conflict. The main reason behind the emergency is believed to be Jayaprakash Narayan’s army and police not obeying the orders of the government, which comes under the purview of armed struggle.
