Every year the central government celebrates National Statics Day to popularize the use of statics in everyday life. To sensitize the public about how statics helps in formulating policies. This day is celebrated at the national level. National Statistics Day on 29th June, Late Prof. It is celebrated on the birth anniversary of PC Mahalanobis.
P C Mahalanobis was a Bengali scientist and applied statistician, born on 29 June 1893. He is known for giving the Mahalanobis Distance, a statistical measure of population studies. He was also a member of the first Planning Commission of independent India. Mahalanobis laid the foundation of the Indian Statistical Institute and also contributed to the preparation of large-scale sample surveys. Due to his contribution, he is considered the father of modern statistics in India.
Know what is this year’s theme
This year due to Corona epidemic, the main event of National Statistics Day is being organized through video conferencing / webcasting at NITI Aayog, New Delhi. The chief guest of the program is Rao Inderjit Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI) and the Ministry of Planning. Pro. Bimal Kumar Roy, Chairman, National Statistical Commission (NSC); Many guests including Dr. GP Samant will attend this program. Apart from this, senior officers of Central/State Governments will also participate in the program through video conferencing/webcasting. The theme of the year is ‘Ending hunger, promoting food security and agriculture’.
