The MP government has given the Bakswaha forest in Chhatarpur district on a lease of 50 years to Axel Mining Industries Company of Birla Group for diamond mining. Its area is about 382.13 hectares. About 2.15 lakh green trees and plants of the forest will be cut. Environmental lovers and their organizations have started a movement due to the danger looming over such a huge greenery and protests are going on.
It is said that in the middle of this forest there is a deposit of about 3.5 crore carats of diamonds under the ground. Its estimated price is about 60 thousand crores. Under the Diamond Mining Project, about 2.5 lakh trees of the forest will be cut to extract these diamonds. The project to extract diamonds by cutting trees was first received by the Rio Tinto Company in the year 2000. But she left the company. Now this project has been given to Axel Mining and Industries Limited Company of Birla Group, which wants to work on it.
Where is the screw stuck in the diamond mining project?
About two years ago in December 2019, the Madhya Pradesh government auctioned this forest. In which Axel Mining and Industries Limited of Birla Group made the highest bid. After this, the government gave this forest to the company on a lease of 50 years. However, the company will have to take necessary approvals from the Environment and Forest Department of the central government in the next five years. The matter is stuck due to this approval, because the local people here are opposing the cutting of the forest.

This is the area of Bundelkhand, where there is already a shortage of water. Whereas water is used a lot in the Diamond Project. In such a situation, the water crisis in the area can also increase. Although the company and the government say that these trees will not be cut together, but will be cut in 12 phases and 10 lakh trees will also be planted in their place.

Actually, there are many types of essential trees present in this place. There are many rare species of trees including Teak, Acacia, Kem, Peepal, Tendu, Jamun, Bahera and Arjun. These trees and the wood from them are the livelihood of the people here. About 17 villages will be affected by this project.

It is said that apart from the Bakswaha forest, there are also deposits of diamonds in Panna. There are about 22 lakh carats of diamonds here. Whereas in the forest of Bakswaha there are more than 3 crore 42 lakh carat diamonds.
