New DelhiToday is National Doctors Day. Doctors have played a very important role in the fight against the corona epidemic. Many doctors have also lost their lives while serving the people. This year the theme of National Doctors Day has been linked to the corona virus – Building Fairer, Healthier World. But the number of doctors in the country is not enough to maintain our health. One doctor is present here to serve on 1348 people. Whereas according to the guidelines of WHO, there should be one doctor for one thousand people.
Current status of doctors in the country
At present there are 12 lakh 89 thousand registered doctors in the country. The number of doctors engaged in the profession is 10 lakh 31 thousand i.e. only 80 percent of the total registered doctors. There is still a shortage of three lakh 60 thousand doctors in the country. So far 798 doctors have lost their lives in the second wave of Corona. Whereas last year 734 doctors died of corona. At present, 1.28 percent of GDP is being spent on the health sector, while 2.50 percent of GDP needs to be spent.
The doctors’ community has played an important role in the fight against the Kovid-19 epidemic and even at this time, doctors are engaged in serving the country without caring for their lives. The Prime Minister has often praised doctors and other people working on the front lines for this in his addresses. National Doctors Day is celebrated every year on 1st July across the country. This day is the birthday and death anniversary of the great doctor of the country and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. This day is celebrated in his memory.
