Venkaiah Naidu was born on 1 July 1949 in Chavatapalem. At that time it was the situation in Madras State. Today it is in Andhra Pradesh. The Vice President was combative from his student life. This is where he started his political journey. Naidu was a volunteer in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and joined the ABVP during his college days.
He was elected as the President of the Students’ Union of Colleges affiliated to Andhra University. He came into limelight for his leading role in the Jai Andhra movement of 1972. In 1974, Jayaprakash Narayan was the convener of the Anti-Corruption Unit of Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti in Andhra Pradesh. He was put in jail during the Emergency.

Naidu was twice elected as an MLA to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Udayagiri constituency of Nellore district in 1978 and 1983. He became one of the most popular leaders of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh. After this he came into the politics of the center and then there was no looking back. He twice became the national president of the BJP and in 1999 became the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development in the government led by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Before becoming the Vice President, he was the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in the Modi government.
