India has urged the European Union to recognize the Kovishield and Covaccine vaccines in the EU COVID Digital Certificate regime. Also, India has proposed that if both the vaccines being given to Indian citizens are recognized, India will also recognize the European vaccine equally.
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar raised this issue in a meeting with EU leaders on the margins of the G-20 foreign ministers meeting in Italy. India is constantly insisting that any system of movement based on vaccine should be based on the principles of fairness and equality.
Keep in mind that the vaccine-based digital certificate system is being implemented in the European Union region from 1 July. Under this, all those people who have received the vaccine will be able to travel in the European Union countries. This arrangement is currently only for citizens of EU member states. But there is every possibility that further traffic and movement rules should be made on the basis of this in the EU region.
India has also filed its complaints and questions regarding the fact that the Kovishield being given in India on the same formula which has been validated in the European Union region of AstraZhenca was not approved. The European Union says that the European Medical Agency has not received any application for approval from Covishield.
However, India has proposed separately from the European Union as well as its member countries to recognize Kovishield and Covaccine. In return, India will also recognize the digital certificate of vaccination being given in the country concerned. Along with this, on the basis of mutual recognition, ease of movement and concession in warranty rules will also be given.
According to government sources, it has also been mentioned in the proposal sent by India that the information of people who have received the vaccine in India can be authenticated on the Kovin portal. Significantly, India has been consistently raising the point that any system implemented on the basis of the Kovid vaccine must be fair and equitable.
