Chandigarh: A day after Punjab’s opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and two other party leaders alleged illegal mining near the Beas river, the Amritsar Police registered an FIR against him.
According to the FIR registered at Beas police station in Amritsar, a case has been registered against Badal, Virsa Singh Valtoha and Amarpal Singh Boney under sections 188, 506, 341 of the Indian Penal Code and Epidemic Diseases Act. This case has been registered on the complaint of M/s Friends and Company Commissionerate.
Badal had on Wednesday alleged that illegal mining was being done near the Beas river in Punjab. However, the state’s mining department had vehemently denied the allegation. SAD leader Badal had claimed that according to the National Green Tribunal, mining activity cannot be done within five kilometers of a bridge, but in this case, sand mining is being done within a kilometer of the bridge.
At the same time, the Mining Department of Punjab in Chandigarh had said that the site visited by the SAD chief was valid. A department spokesperson had said, “As per the instructions issued by the government, the work in the mining block is being executed through M/s Friends & Co. Annual revenue of Rs 34.4 crore is generated from this mining block. “No illegal mining is being done in Amritsar district,” he said.
