DehradunThere has been a period of instability in the politics of Uttarakhand, which came into existence just 21 years ago. In the 21-year history of Uttarakhand, no one except one Chief Minister could hold the chair for 5 years. Tirath Singh Rawat, who took oath as the Chief Minister four months ago, has also tendered his resignation. So far, nine different chief ministers have taken oath. BJP alone has changed its chief ministers six times, now a new chief minister is being elected for the seventh time.
Nityanand Swami became the first Chief Minister
Uttarakhand was declared a separate state in the year 2000. Then for the first time BJP got a chance to form the government. Elected BJP’s Nityanand Swami for the chief minister’s post. But within a year, he has to leave the chair. Nityanand Swami was the Chief Minister from 9 November 2000 to 29 October 2001. On 30 October 2001, BJP leader Bhagat Koshyari took over the chair. But his journey also ends in just 122 days (1 March 2002). Bhagat Singh Koshyari is currently the Governor of Maharashtra.
Congress got power
In the year 2002, assembly elections were held in Uttarakhand but BJP could not form its government again. Congress formed its government for the first time in Uttarakhand, giving a spectacular performance. Narayan Dutt Tiwari becomes the Chief Minister on March 2, 2002. ND Tiwari was the only Chief Minister who completed his five-year term.
BJP’s return in the second assembly
In the year 2007, elections were held in Uttarakhand for the second assembly and BJP again came to power. Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri was made the Chief Minister. But within two years and 4 months, his chair was given to Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. Two years later, the dice turned again. Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri becomes Chief Minister once, but only for 6 months.
Congress also changed CM in the third assembly
In the year 2012, elections were held for the third assembly. Once again the power comes in the hands of Congress. Congress stalwart Vijay Bahuguna Joshi takes oath as the Chief Minister. But even the Congress did not break the practice of changing the Chief Minister. Bahuguna also had to leave the throne after two years. Congress leader Harish Rawat takes over the reins of the Uttarakhand Congress government. Harish Rawat was the Chief Minister for two years and two months. President’s rule was imposed here. After this, Harish Rawat again became the Chief Minister from 11 May 2016 to 18 March 2017.
In 2017 BJP made Trivendra Singh Rawat the Chief Minister.
In the year 2017 assembly elections, power was lost from the hands of Congress. BJP formed its government with full majority. This time BJP made Trivendra Singh as the Chief Minister. He held the power of the state for four years. It was believed that he would be the second Chief Minister to complete the term of five years, but it could not happen. Many BJP leaders in the state were not happy with him. In such a situation, it was decided to make Tirath Singh Rawat the CM. On 10 March 2021, Tirath Singh Rawat took over as the Chief Minister. But he had to leave this post only after 114 days. BJP has called a meeting of the party legislature party from 3 pm on Saturday, in which the new face of the Chief Minister will be decided.
