New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will hold a meeting with the leaders of the minority community to discuss the issue of population. He said on Saturday that 150 Muslim intellectuals would attend the meeting. He said that during the last one month I met both the factions of All Assam Minority Students Union and everyone said that population growth is a problem and we need to solve it. There is no dispute on this in Assam.
Chief Minister Sarma further said, “They (outsiders) do not understand the gravity of the situation and create controversy only because BJP CM has said so. It cannot be a dispute. Trying to end illiteracy, people should welcome it.”
State government working on two children policy for population control
Sarma had said last month that his government would introduce a population policy with a two-child rule and benefit families that follow it. The Chief Minister had said that the Muslim community is growing at a high rate of 29 per cent (decade) in the state while the Hindu growth rate is 10 per cent. Sarma said that he will discuss population control measures with the leaders of the Muslim community and urge the spread of these measures. The Chief Minister had also said that the two-child policy is the only way to eradicate poverty and illiteracy among the Muslim community in the state. He said that there is no opposition from the community.
