Mumbai: People have to face many problems when they are infected with the corona virus. Even after recovering from it, people are battling with new diseases. Many cases of black fungus have been reported among people who have recovered from corona. At the same time, now three cases of avascular necrosis (AVN) i.e. bone death have been reported in Mumbai. Doctors fear that more cases of AVN may come to the fore in the next few months.
In the disease of vascular necrosis, the bones begin to melt. This happens due to the inability of blood to reach the bone tissue properly. According to a report in Times of India, three youths have been treated at Hinduja Hospital in Mahim, Mumbai. Their age is less than 40 years. This disease appeared in them after 2 months of treatment of corona.
Symptoms recognized early by patients being doctors themselves
According to Dr. Sanjay Aggarwal, Medical Director, Hinduja Hospital, Mahim, “These patients experienced pain in their femur bone (the highest part of the thigh bone) and since these three were doctors, they recognized the symptoms and came for immediate treatment. The common factor between AVN and mucormycosis (black fungus) is steroid use. It is used in the treatment of Kovid-19 patients.
Corticosteroids being used in the treatment of Kovid-19
Dr. Agarwal’s research paper on AVN ‘Avascular Necrosis A Part of Long COVID-19’ was published in the prestigious medical journal ‘BMJ Case Studies’ on Saturday. In this, he said that there will be an increase in AVN cases due to ‘large-scale use of life-saving corticosteroids’ in Kovid-19 cases.
