New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tributes to the founder of Jana Sangh, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, on his birth anniversary. Speaking on the occasion, he said that Dr. Mukherjee dedicated his life for the unity and progress of India. Apart from Prime Minister Modi, many other senior BJP leaders also remembered Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his birth anniversary.
Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “I bow to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary. His lofty ideals inspire millions across the country. Dr. Mukherjee dedicated his life for the unity and progress of India. He also distinguished himself as a remarkable scholar and intellectual.
Mukherjee was a minister in the Nehru government, know why he resigned
The country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had included Mukherjee in the interim government as the Minister of Industries and Supplies, but he resigned from the cabinet after the agreement between Nehru and the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Liaquat Ali.
Mukherjee had vehemently opposed the grant of special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 by the then Congress government. Mukherjee was arrested on 11 May 1953 for entering Kashmir in violation of the permit system. In the year 1953, on June 23, he died in prison under mysterious circumstances.
BJP celebrates his death anniversary as Sacrifice Day. Abolition of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir has been a very old issue of BJP. When Modi became the Prime Minister for the second time after coming to power again in the year 2019, the central government abrogated Article 370, which gave special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
