Kolkata: After more than five decades, a proposal to constitute a Legislative Council has been passed by the TMC in the Bengal Legislative Assembly. Although all BJP MLAs have opposed this proposal, but this resolution has been passed by 196 votes. Now the question is how this proposal will help CM Mamta to save her power because it is being discussed on social media that it may be that Mamata Banerjee may have to resign from the post of Chief Minister of West Bengal.
Tirath Singh Rawat had to resign from the post of Chief Minister of Uttarakhand due to no by-election. He also did not win from any constituency in the Uttarakhand elections. On the other hand, in West Bengal, Mamta Banerjee lost from Nandigram seat to Shubhendu Adhikari by a little less than 2000 votes. On the other hand, uncertainty over the conduct of by-elections in the next 6 months due to the Kovid epidemic is putting Mamta and Trinamool Congress in great apprehension.
Also, after the recent resignation from the post of CM in Uttarakhand, the concern for TMC has increased. Therefore, this Legislative Council will prove to be beneficial not only for Mamta but also for other TMC leaders like Mukul Roy.
Promise of Legislative Council
In fact, Mamata Banerjee had promised in 2011 after her first election victory that she would form a Legislative Council. There is also a lot of emphasis on fulfilling this promise as it will also establish a place for other TMC leaders. Still this resolution is yet to be passed in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. After which the formation of the Legislative Council will be completed only after the President’s signature.
However, even before this, in the case of Assam and Rajasthan, it was seen that the proposal of the Legislative Council got stuck in the Rajya Sabha despite being passed in the state assembly. In Bengal, the resolution has been passed in the state assembly, BJP’s 69 votes were against the proposal. BJP says that this is TMC’s way of doing backdoor politics. Along with Mamta, this political trick is being played to make room for the leaders who had to accept defeat in Bengal elections.
