Senior leader Mukul Roy, who recently returned to the ruling Trinamool Congress after winning the assembly elections on a BJP ticket, was on Friday appointed as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) by Assembly Speaker Viman Banerjee.
Against this decision, BJP MLAs under the leadership of Leader of Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari staged a walkout from the assembly. After this, a furious Shubhendu Adhikari said that the Speaker, using his authority, has announced the appointment of Mukul Roy as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. This is the first time that no opposition parties have been selected for the Speaker’s post.

Roy, officially the BJP MLA from Krishnanagar North, had joined the Trinamool Congress last month. However, he did not resign from the assembly despite the BJP telling him several times. Roy was elected a member of the PAC in June.
The official said that normally an opposition MLA is elected president of the PAC as per the rules, but the Trinamool Congress has misused the rule to make Roy the president.
