New Delhi: In the midst of politics over water scarcity in Delhi, now the Delhi government will approach the Supreme Court. Delhi Jal Board vice-chairman Raghav Chadha said that the Haryana government has stopped the water supply of Delhi, regarding this, the Delhi government will go to the Supreme Court and urge the court to hear the matter at the earliest. He said that the level of Yamuna river at Wazirabad Pond in Delhi should be 674.5 feet. Whereas now the water level of Yamuna has come down to 667 feet, that is, the entire river has dried up. Due to shortage of water, the capacity of Chandrawal Water Treatment Plant has come down from 90 MGD to 55 MGD, at Wazirabad Plant from 135 MGD to 80 MGD and at Okhla Plant from 20 MGD to 12 MGD.
Accusing the Haryana government of stopping the water of Delhi’s share, Raghav Chadha said that Delhi is a landlocked city, Delhi does not have any water body of its own. Delhi has always been dependent on neighboring states for its water supply. Delhi has signed treaties with neighboring states several decades ago. Apart from this, there is an order of the Supreme Court, according to which the Government of Uttar Pradesh will give the prescribed water to the people of Delhi through the river Ganga, the Government of Haryana from the Yamuna river and the Government of Punjab from Bhakra Nagal. The treaties decided by the Supreme Court have been formally signed by the governments of the states. And according to this, till date water is supplied in Delhi.
DJB Vice President said that the things we are seeing this time are amazing. The Haryana government has stopped the water of Delhi’s right. Water is not being allowed to flow towards Delhi, due to which the level of water that comes through Yamuna river in Delhi has fallen. The level of Yamuna river at Wazirabad Pond in Delhi should be 674.5 feet, if there is a decrease of even one foot in it, then there is a panic in the whole of Delhi. But now the water level of Yamuna has come down from 674.5 to 667 feet, that is, the river has completely dried up. The Supreme Court had decided in 1995 that Haryana has to supply water to Delhi daily up to the prescribed limit, but Haryana has cut it by 120 MGD. In such a situation, the Delhi Jal Board has decided that we will go to the Supreme Court against the Haryana government and plead for the rights of the people of Delhi.
