Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram via video conferencing tomorrow at 11 am. A source said that he will talk to the Chief Ministers about the situation of Kovid-19 in these states.
There is going to be a review meeting with the northeastern states from his side at a time when there is a fear of raising its head again in the form of the R-factor, which indicates the speed at which the infection is spreading in India. . The decline in active cases has been slowing down recently, while Kerala and the north-eastern states have emerged as areas of concern.
Two days ago it was reported that at least 90 percent of the samples sent for genome sequencing in Tripura have been found to have highly transmissible delta plus variants. Cases of the delts plus strain in Tripura, one of the few small states with good vaccination coverage, have raised concerns among officials.
In order to break the high transmission rate, Tripura has reimposed its 24-hour weekend curfew from 12 noon today to 6 am on Monday. The state has already imposed curfew in urban areas, including the capital Agartala, where positivity was highest at around 10 per cent.
Earlier this month, the Center had deployed multi-disciplinary specialist teams in six states including Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura after showing a spurt in COVID-19 cases. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that at present about 80% of the cases of Kovid-19 in India are being seen from 90 districts and 14 of them are from the North East.
During the review meeting last week, it was found that out of the country’s 73 districts with more than 10% positivity rate, 46 were from northeastern states, prompting the Center to shift its focus to the region.
A recent letter circulated by Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that Arunachal Pradesh is of concern that the weekly positivity rate in the state is 16.2 (between June 28 and July 4) and has seen an increase in this trend. Other northeastern states, such as Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya and Nagaland, are also reporting high positivity rates.
