Covaxin: Bharat Biotech expressed hope that soon the World Health Organization (WHO) will include the vaccine in the Emergency Use List (EUL). The company said that all the documents required for the EUL of Covaxin have been handed over to the WHO by July 9. Now the review process has started with the hope that we will get EUL from WHO at the earliest.
Significantly, Covaccine is India’s indigenous corona vaccine. It is being manufactured by Bharat Biotech. In the ongoing vaccination campaign in India, this vaccine is playing a leading role in the fight against Corona. Let us tell you that a few days ago, WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Viswanathan said that a decision on including Kovaccine in the EUL can be taken in four to six weeks.
Swaminathan, while addressing a webinar organized by the Center for Science and Environment (CSE) on July 9, said that Bharat Biotech, the manufacturer of the vaccine, is uploading all its data on our portal and WHO is reviewing this vaccine.
According to WHO guidelines, EUL is a process by which new or unlicensed products can be used in public health emergencies. Swaminathan had said, “EUL has a process in which a company has to complete Phase III trials and submit all the data to the regulatory department of WHO which is studied by an expert advisory group.”
WHO has approved vaccines from Pfizer-BioNtech, AstraZeneca-SK Bio-Serum Institute of India, AstraZeneca EU, Janssen, Moderna and Sinopharm for emergency use. Swaminathan had said, “Right now we have approved six vaccines with EUL and recommendations have been received from our Strategic Expert Consultative Group. We are optimistic about Covaccine. Bharat Biotech has started putting their data on our portal and this will be the next vaccine which will be reviewed by our expert committee.
