Coronavirus: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today discussed the situation of COVID-19 in the North-East states through video conferencing with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. He expressed his concern to identify the discrepancies in the system. He also stressed on the importance of accelerating the vaccination effort to prevent the arrival of the third wave and asked citizens to be careful.
During this, PM Modi said, ‘We need to take steps at the micro level to prevent the spread of infection. We need to make use of the experiences we have gathered in the last one and a half years. Create subtle control zones. This will help us to get out of this situation. He further said, ‘We need to keep an eye on all types of infection because it gives rise to new challenges for us.’ Recognizing the impact of the pandemic on tourism and trade, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took adequate precautions and issued a stern warning against overcrowding in hill stations.
Warning against negligence and overcrowding
He said that there is a need to understand that the third wave will not come on its own. The main question in our mind should be how to stop the third wave. Experts are repeatedly warning against negligence and overcrowding as it can lead to a huge spike in cases. He acknowledged the innovative ideas of the North-Eastern states to combat the coronavirus, including appreciating the hard work of the health care workers despite the harsh geographical conditions of the states.
“Some states are yet to improve, but others have successfully reduced wastage of vaccines,” he said. Not only that, you have got maximum utility out of each vial. The cabinet has also approved a new package of Rs 23,000 crore. It will help strengthen health infrastructure and improve testing, diagnostics and genome sequencing in the North East. Wherever cases are increasing, ICU beds will be made available.
The Prime Minister said that the Northeast is equally important in the Central Government’s ‘Vaccine for All, Free for All’ campaign and the vaccination process should be expedited. He said, ‘Take the help of social, educational institutions, celebrities and religious organizations to tackle the myths related to vaccination and mobilization. Speed up the vaccination campaign in areas where the virus is likely to spread.
Northeast region a matter of concern
The PM highlighted the improvement in medical infrastructure to better handle COVID cases as well as the assistance provided through the PM CARES Fund, action taken to augment the supply of medical oxygen and review of vaccination progress. While there is a steady decline in the number of Kovid in most areas of the country, experts have commented that the Northeast region has been a matter of concern. Keeping in mind the national trend, the number of cases is either increasing or not falling.
