Shimla: The Southwest Monsoon finally covered the entire country on Tuesday after a delay of five days, causing heavy rains in parts of North India, including Delhi, where people were reeling under heat as there was no rain.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) director Surendra Paul told the media that heavy rains could lead to landslides, flooding of low-lying areas, heavy flows in drains and disruption of civic amenities.
In Himachal Pradesh, rescue operations are underway after a landslide in Boh Valley of Kangra district left one person dead and nine others feared trapped under the debris.
A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Monday rescued four people and efforts were on to pull others out of the rubble, an official said on Tuesday. Heavy rains have thrown normal life out of gear in the hill state and created a flood-like situation in several districts.
Sudden floods due to heavy rains, instructions to tourists to postpone travel
Several cars and two buildings were washed away in flash floods caused by heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh’s Dharamsala on Monday. Videos of this incident are going viral on social media. The Kangra airport in Gaggal had to be closed due to bad weather. The flash floods in the area damaged several buildings, including a government school. The district administration directed the tourists to postpone their journey in view of the heavy rains. Traffic on the Mandi-Pathankot highway was also disrupted due to the rain.
Monsoon reached Delhi for the first time in 19 years with a delay of two weeks
The southwest monsoon finally reached Delhi on Tuesday morning, bringing some relief to the people from the scorching heat.
