New DelhiThe Supreme Court will hear today the decision of the UP government to approve the Kanwar Yatra amid fears of a third wave of corona epidemic. The court has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter. The court has said that Uttarakhand has canceled the journey in view of the possibility of third wave of corona but UP has not done so. This attitude of the state governments is misleading to the people. In this case, the court has issued notices to Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the central government. The hearing will be held from 11.30 am to 12 noon today.
A bench of Justices R F Nariman and B R Gavai referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that no compromise can be made in the efforts to contain Kovid. The bench said that people are shocked after the decision of the Uttar Pradesh government to allow religious pilgrimage to start from July 25.
Kovid protocol will be strictly followed during Kavad Yatra – Health Minister
On the other hand, the Health Minister of the UP government, Jai Pratap said that along with the Kovid protocol, the guidelines given by the Supreme Court in this matter will also be strictly followed in the Kanwar Yatra starting in the state on July 25. At present, preparations are being made for the Kavad Yatra to be taken out every year in consultation with the district level officials.
When asked about the Supreme Court taking cognizance of the government’s order to conduct the Kavad Yatra, the Health Minister said, “We will consider whatever guidelines are issued during the hearing.” Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a meeting with officials last week to take stock of the security and preparedness of the Kanwar Yatra.
