New Delhi: A new dimension has been added to the military relations between India and America. The US Navy handed over two of its anti-submarine MH-60R ‘Romeo’ helicopters to the Indian Navy on Saturday. India had signed a deal for 24 Anti-Submarine Multi Mission Helicopters from the US during the visit of Donald Trump in the year 2019. In fact, the US government had signed an agreement with the helicopter maker, Lockheed Martin (Sikorsee) to make 24 helicopters for the Indian Navy.
The US Navy is watching this agreement on behalf of the US government. In such a situation, the US Navy has asked the company to give three helicopters of its fleet to the Indian Navy first. The Lockheed company is already making the MH-60R ‘Romeo’ helicopter for the US Navy. Two of these three were handed over to the Indian Navy by the US Navy on Saturday. Both these helicopters were handed over to the officers of the Indian Navy during an event at the North Island Naval Base of the US Navy. During this, India’s Ambassador to America Taranjit Singh Sandhu was also present.
In February 2019, when US President Donald Trump visited India, the two countries had signed an agreement for 24 multi-mission MH-60R helicopters for the Indian Navy under Foreign Military Sales (FMS). India did this deal with America for $ 2.6 billion (about Rs 21 thousand crore). The US Navy gave these two helicopters to India quickly so that the Indian Navy can start its training on them as soon as possible.
It is believed that the remaining 22 helicopters will also start getting it soon. These ‘MH60R’ helicopters, built by the American company, Lockheed Martin, are used for anti-submarine and anti-surface (ship) warfare. Apart from this, these Romeo helicopters are also used in the search and rescue operation in the sea.
The Indian Navy desperately needed these anti-submarine helicopters. The Navy’s Anti Submarine Helicopters, Seeking are very old. These seaking helicopters are stationed on the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. Apart from this, the Navy also needs these MH60R helicopters for the indigenous aircraft carrier, Vikrant, being built at the Cochin Shipyard.
Very advanced, these American Romeo helicopters are equipped with Hellfire missiles, rockets and torpedoes and can destroy enemy submarines several hundred meters below the sea if needed. India will get a lot of help from these Romeo Anti Submarine Helicopters to deal with the way the submarines of China and Pakistan are becoming a challenge for India in the Indian Ocean.
