Medicines worth over Rs 2 crore have been burnt in public glare in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. A massive crackdown on drug smuggling has been taken by the Assam Police to ensure a drug-free Assam. Heroin 1.025 kg, ganja 1200 kg, opium 3 kg, tab 84.375 kg have been burnt by administration in Golaghat.
In fact, two days ago, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced that the seized drugs would be publicly burnt in Golaghat, Diphu, Nagaon and Hojai on July 17 and July 18 to give a message of zero tolerance. The Chief Minister of Assam also said that the state is poised to become like Punjab due to drug abuse and trade by the youth.
anti drug campaign
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the state assembly that several shocking facts about drug abuse and smuggling came to light during the ongoing campaign against drugs, which was launched soon after taking over as Chief Minister in May . Sarma said during the budget session, ‘We heard about the serious problem of drug abuse in Punjab. But our anti-drug campaign in the last two months has revealed that our state is also in the grip of such drugs.
Earlier, Assam used to be a transit route for bringing medicines from Myanmar via Manipur and Nagaland, he said. But we are stuck on startling facts about large scale local consumption like Punjab. Many young boys are consuming heroin, psychotropic substances such as Yaba tablets and All is your tablets, which were found to be used among the cadres of terrorist groups to carry on their activities for continuous days without any sleep.

The police have so far recovered 42 kg opium and 78,000 bottles of cough syrup, which are used as drugs, and 13.63 lakh tables (psychotropic substances). A total of 1,897 people (both kingpin and peddler) have been arrested in 1,121 cases registered since May.
Although the police have been taking action against drug trafficking in the past, it intensified after the new government came to power in May this year. 10 kg heroin was recovered in 2016, 5 kg in 2017, 7 kg in 2018, 23 kg in 2019 and 27 kg in 2020.
