Bhuj: Taking lessons from the popular television serial ‘Balika Vadhu’, a progressive village in Kutch is working towards empowering the women of the village through Balika Panchayat. The objective of this step is to address the issues of girls and of girls, by girls.
The population of Kunaria village, about 18 kms from the district headquarters in Bhuj is approximately 4,000. Young women in the age group of 10 to 21 years of the village will contest the elections. This girls-only council will run parallel to the adult village version and will address issues related to adolescent girls and women in the village.
Eight candidates are in the fray
There is a close contest in the elections to be held on Monday. The entire village has geared up in election mode with rallies, door-to-door campaigning and waters meetings. The result is also to be declared on the same day.
Idea to prepare future women leader
According to village sarpanch Suresh Changa “selected girls will implement those schemes which will address the issues of girls and women in the village. Our idea is to prepare women leaders of the future."
