Sourav Ganguly is seen as such a captain in India, who took the Indian cricket team out of the trap of fixing and wrote the story of the new team India. Along with this, Ganguly is also known for his grandfather.
Known as ‘Prince of Calcutta’, ‘Lord of the off side’ and ‘Dada’, Sourav Ganguly played his first international match for India on January 11, 1992. He also scored a century in his debut Test at Lord’s. Ganguly took charge of Team India in 146 ODIs and 49 Test matches. Under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly, the Indian team managed to win 76 ODIs and 21 Test matches, while 15 Tests were drawn. Sourav Ganguly not only gave a historic victory by defeating Australia 2-1 in 2001, but also made Team India a habit of winning matches on foreign soil.
Sourav Ganguly was born on 08 July 1972 in Kolkata. Initially, Dada wanted to make a career in football, but due to his elder brother being a cricketer, he also started playing cricket. Today, on Dada’s birthday, we are going to tell you some unheard stories of his grandfather.
1- “I will not leave the room until Harbhajan comes in the team.”
This thing is from the year 2001. At that time Dada was the newly appointed captain. But his grandeur was nothing new. It is about the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The team was to be selected for the Test series against Australia. Dada said that he wanted Harbhajan Singh in the team, but the selectors did not agree with him. Actually, the selectors did not see that thing in Bhajji, but Dada was adamant. He clearly said that I will not leave the room until Harbhajan comes in the team.
After this the selectors had to bow down and Bhajji came in the team. Harbhajan took a hat-trick in that match by dismissing Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne. He took seven wickets in the first innings and six in the second innings. The story ahead of this is recorded in history.
2- When grandfather was out of the team for not carrying drinks
This is when Dada was a newcomer to the team. He was asked to carry drinks on the field for the senior player. But the grandfather refused to do so. Several reports said that Dada did not like the way he ordered them and that is why he refused to take drinks on the field. After this Dada was dropped from the team.
3- Married in film style
Very few people know that Dada ran away from his girlfriend Donna Roy and married him. Actually, earlier both the families were not agreeing to this marriage. After this, Dada and Donna decided to run away from home and get married. However, later his family agreed and on 21 February 1997, Sourav Ganguly and Dona Roy were formally married.
4- This is how Dada became a lefty batsman
Apart from batting, Sourav Ganguly does all his work with the right hand. He does bowling, writing and almost everything with his straight hand. But he learned to bat with the left hand, so that he could use his brother Snehasish Ganguly’s cricket kit.
5- Reply to England by taking off the T-shirt
On hearing the name of Sourav Ganguly, the picture of every Indian taking off his t-shirt on the balcony of Lord’s comes to mind. But do you know why he did this? Actually, all-rounder Andrew Flintoff took off his t-shirt on the field after winning England at the Wankhede in Mumbai. Responding to this, Dada expressed his happiness by taking off the T-shirt after India’s historic victory at Lord’s.
