Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly today said the controversy over the decision not to send any other player to England in place of injured opener Shubman Gill is a matter related to the selection committee.
The Indian team management, through its administrative manager Girish Dongre, had asked on June 28 to send two openers in place of Gill. He also suggested the names of Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikal. But the chairman of the selection committee Chetan Sharma did not send any formal reply till two days ago, as four openers are already in the team.
When Ganguly was asked about the controversial matter on the occasion of his 49th birthday today, he said, “It is the decision of the selectors.” Let us inform that Shaw and Padikal are currently in Sri Lanka for the limited overs series, where the Indian team will play three ODIs and as many T20 matches under the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan. On the other hand, under the leadership of regular captain Virat Kohli, the Indian team will play a five-Test series against England from August 4.
Rest matches of IPL will be organized in September- Dada
Ganguly also expressed hope that he will be able to organize the remaining matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the UAE in September. “Nothing will happen, we will handle everything. It will start in September,” he said.
Ganguly reiterated that BCCI has to organize this year’s ICC T20 World Cup in UAE keeping in mind the safety of all stakeholders. Earlier it was to be organized in India.
Ganguly is fully fit now
He said, “It will be regretted but no one has seen such situations in their whole life. Last year the World Cup was canceled. If this time also the World Cup was canceled due to Kovid, it would have cost the game a lot.” There would have been damage. So we decided to organize the event at a safer place.”
Ganguly had to undergo angioplasty in January this year due to cardiac problems, but said he was fit now. He said, “I am completely fit. Another year has passed. Time goes on like this. Try to stay at home as much as possible in this time of Kovid. It is not only for you but for the people around you.” It is also necessary for this. People in the house have made preparations to celebrate. Everything will happen inside the house.”
