Tokyo Olympics 2020: The Olympic Games are going to be held in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, from July 23. Five male and four female boxers from India have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. India is expected to win maximum medals in boxing.
The trend of boxing in India has increased a lot in the last few years. One reason for this is India’s medal in boxing in the Olympic Games. Vijender Singh won the bronze medal from India in the 2008 Olympics. After this, MC Mary Kom won the bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics.
This time many boxers are participating in these games and will try to win more than one medal. Indian team’s Director of High Performance Satiago Nieva said that the weight of expectations will not fall on the boxers as they have done well in the last few years and are confident in their ability.
In Tokyo Olympics too, all eyes will be on world champion Mary Kom. Mary Kom will present the challenge for India in the 51 kg category. Mary Kom also wants to win the second medal after the 2012 London Olympics. Since Mary Kom is now 38 years old, she is apparently playing her last Olympics and she would like to make it memorable by winning a medal.
Asia champion Pooja Rani is a strong contender for India in the middle weight 78 kg. Apart from these, 2018 World Championship bronze medalists Simranjit Kaur and Lovlina Borgohain (welterweight 69kg) are the other women boxers who will be expected to bring medals.
In men’s section Vikas Krishna Yadav (69kg), 2019 World silver medalist Amit Panghal (52kg), 2014 Asia Games bronze medalist Satish Kumar (plus 91kg), 2018 Commonwealth Games runner-up Manish Kaushak (63kg) and Ashish Kumar (75kg) will present his challenge in the weight category.
All nine boxers are in good form and have performed well in other tournaments before the Tokyo Olympics. India had won a total of 15 medals including two gold, five silver and eight bronze at the ASBC Asia Boxing Championships held in Dubai in May this year.
A few months before this, in the Boxing World Cup in December 2020, India won nine medals with three gold medals. This is the first time that so many boxers have qualified from India’s side.
