Tokyo Olympics 2020: The Olympic Games are going to start from July 23 in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. India’s star tennis player Sumit Nagal has got an entry in the Olympic Games. Sumit Nagal got a ticket to Tokyo Olympics due to the withdrawal of many big players.
Sumit Nagal, ranked 154th in the latest ATP rankings, is currently in Germany, where he lost his round-32 match at the Hamburg European Open. Sumit Nagal has expressed happiness over getting the Olympic ticket. Nagal said, “No words can describe my feelings. Qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics is a pleasant experience. Thank you all for your support and well wishes.”
If Nagal completes the entire process in the next few days, then he can partner Sania Mirza or Ankita Raina in the mixed doubles event. Not only this, Nagal also has a chance to play in men’s doubles. To play men’s doubles with Rohan Bopanna, Nagal needs approval from the International Tennis Federation and the All India Tennis Association.
Another Indian player may get a chance
Bopanna and Divij Sharan are India’s doubles players but the ITF will consider a player who has qualified for the signals as a choice for the doubles event. AITA has replaced Sharan with Nagal. India’s top-ranked singles player Yuki Bhambri will not be able to travel to Tokyo as he is suffering from a knee injury.
Nagal, who had reached the second round of the 2020 US Open, could not qualify for the Olympics on June 14 as he was ranked 144th in the cut-off qualification list. But with the withdrawal of other top-ranked players like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal from the Olympics, lower-ranked players like Nagal have got a chance.
If some other players withdraw from Tokyo, then another Indian tennis player Prajnesh Gunneswaran, who is ranked 153 in the ATP rankings, may also get a chance to join the Olympics.
