Tokyo Olympics 2020: The Olympic Games are going to be held in Japan’s capital Tokyo from July 23 amid the havoc of the Corona virus. The first batch of Indian players and support staff left on Saturday to participate in the Olympic Games. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur bid farewell to Indian players from eight sports participating in Tokyo Olympics at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Anurag Thakur also wished the players good luck for the victory.
To bid farewell to the first batch of players, Thakur was accompanied by Minister of State for Sports Nisith Pramanik, SAI Director General Sandeep Pradhan and Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Batra and Secretary General Rajeev Mehta along with other officials. The Indian contingent, which left from Delhi, has a total of 88 members, including 54 players as well as associate members and representatives of the IOA.
The team, which left on Saturday, includes players and associate members from archery, badminton, table tennis, hockey, judo, gymnastics, swimming and weightlifting. This team has the largest number of players in men’s and women’s hockey teams. Hockey teams were accorded a warm welcome at the airport, with airport staff standing on both sides clapping.
Many players have already reached Tokyo
Top Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu had reached Tokyo from her training center in the US on Friday for the Olympic Games starting July 23. Chanu, India’s only weightlifter in the Olympics, reached Tokyo with national coach Vijay Sharma and assistant coach Sandeep Kumar. Another assistant coach of Chanu, Pramod Sharma, left for Delhi with the first batch.
A team of Indian boxers has also left for Tokyo from Italy, which will reach the capital of Japan on Sunday. The team of shooters after arriving in Tokyo from Croatia reached the sports village in the early hours of Saturday where they were handed over to their rooms.
The Indian sailing team, along with Varun Thakkar, Ganpati Chengappa, Vishnu Saravanan, Netra Kumanan, was the first to reach Tokyo. India’s team of 228 people includes 119 players. Due to the Kovid-19 epidemic, the Olympic Games will be held without spectators with strict restrictions.
