Actually, Sanju Samson was injured just before the match and that is why he could not play the first match. He had injured his knee. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement on Sunday saying, “Samson has suffered a knee sprain, due to which he was not available for this match. The medical team is investigating his condition.”
However, the Indian Cricket Board did not give any information about whether Samson will play in the second ODI on 20 July at the same ground. Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav made their ODI debuts from this match.
Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. Dasun Shanaka, who was made the captain of Sri Lanka for this series, said that this ground has a history of batting first after winning the toss, so he has also decided to bat first.
